Scholarship Announcement
Attention
All WNY High School (9-11) Students: Applications
for the Third Annual Buffalo Music Hall of
Fame Music Scholarship are now available.
Applications are being sent to all Western
New York schools, public and private. Students
can check with their Guidance Office and/or
Music teachers to obtain an application.
History:
In
March 2009, The Local 92 American Federation
of Musicians, The Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra,
The Buffalo Music Hall of Fame, and Taylor
Made Jazz featured a first time joint Spotlight,
"Concert From the Heart" at Kleinhan's
Music Hall. The proceeds from this concert
benefitted the Food Bank of Western New York,
The Buffalo City Mission, and a $500 scholarship
to support a local high school student in
their musical endeavors.
In
2010, the Buffalo Music Hall of Fame provided
support for 2 such scholarships for a total
of $750. This year, 2011, we will award up
to $1,000 in scholarship to students attending
public or private schools in Western New York.
Eligibility:
Students
who are attending public or private schools
in Western New York (Erie, Niagara, Orleans,
Chautauqua, Cattaraugus, or Wyoming) in grades
9-11 and who are studying music, business
of music, or any music technical, audio or
production aspect are eligible.
Timeline:
All
applications are due by a deadline of April
22, 2011. They may be submitted electronically
to the Buffalo Music Hall of Fame web site,
or by mail to: Buffalo Music Hall of Fame
Scholarship P.O. Box 256 Buffalo, New York
14205.
All
students will be notified by the end of May
2011 as to the status of their candidacy.
On
October 6, 2011, scholarship winners will
receive their award at the Annual Induction
Gala ceremony for the Buffalo Music Hall of
Fame at the Tralf. They will be invited and
expected to perform along with the 2011 inductees.
Other events held throughout the year will
also be opportunities for the scholarship
winners to demonstrate both talent and community
service. It is expected that the scholarship
winners will engage in as many of these events
as possible. A schedule and information regarding
such events such as Music is Art, M &
T Summer Concerts, Music concerts at the Hard
Rock Café or other venues will be sent
to scholarship winners. This is an excellent
way to network with music professionals, receive
mentoring, demonstrate talent and potential,
and give back to the Western New York community.
Scholarship
Awards:
The amount, up to a total of $1,000, will
be awarded to two or more applicants, depending
on the number and quality received.
Application Process/Content: To be considered
for eligibility, each application must include
the following:
1.
Application Cover Sheet - This includes
student's name, address, telephone number,
e-mail address (if available), grade level
and school attending. Name and contact information
for music teacher or instructor.
2.
An essay which addresses the following areas:
a.
The role that music plays/has played in your
life
b.
What music genre(s)/musicians have influenced
you -how and why?
c.
What is your dream and goal for music in your
future? What are your future plans for studying
music?
d.
How do/will you use your knowledge, talent
and skills to give back or enrich your community?
Please give specific details as to your music
experience in this context.
e.
How will this scholarship be used to help
you with your music study/career?
3.
Optional: One optional letter of recommendation
from the student's music instructor may also
be included.
