Andy Kuhlberg
BMHOF Class of 2007
Growing up in Amherst, Andy Kuhlberg's life
was always about music. Although he was an accomplished
flautist, he surprised his family by showing up at home one day
with a stand-up bass. He worked at playing the bass but never
gave up the flute. After leaving for Boston University, he ended
up in NYC and joined The Danny Kalb Band.
Eventually, the two of them joined with Al
Kooper, Steve Katz, and Roy Blumenthal to form the highly
successful "Blues Project" which developed a huge following on
college campuses and played many concerts as headliners at
venues like "The Fillmore". After moving to California, Kuhlberg
co-founded the highly successful group "Seatrain" which had
commercial success with songs like "Thirteen Questions".
Andy passed away in 2002 but leaves his legacy
of invention both musically and technically, having created what
was then the first electric flute and having created some of the
most interesting music of his time.
