Mike Meldrum
BMHOF Class of 2006
Singer, songwriter, promoter and guitarist,
Michael Meldrum, has been a fixture on the Buffalo music scene
for three decades. He's a founder of the Buffalo Song Project
and produces annual tribute concerts to John Lennon and Bob
Dylan at the popular Nietzsche's club in Allentown.
In fact, Michael and Nietzsche's have enjoyed
a long and satisfying relationship. He hosts the Monday night
singer-songwriter showcase there, as well as the weekly "open
mic" event. Performers range from rookies to seasoned
musicians.
He's a great supporter of new performers and
has helped many in the long climb to success. You'll recognize
names like Townes Van Zandt, Suzanne Vega and Michelle Shocked.
One of Michael's most satisfying roles has
been that of educator. He has a keen eye -- or ear! -- for true
talent. One of his most famous students, Ani Difranco, recently
co-produced Michael's first cd, "Open Ended Question," which was
released on Difranco's Righteous Babe Record label.
Difranco credits Michael with selling her her
first guitar and taking her under his wing. She says he would
take her to his appearances and let her perform with him.
Michael says that Ani is now an inspiration
for him. He adds that he's thrilled that after 30 years, he
finally has his first album! But he's not going to let that
sidetrack him from his first love: finding and nurturing young
talent. Who knows when the next Ani Difranco may show up at
Nietzsche's?
Michael lives in Buffalo with his musician
wife and two children, who have made appearances on his
recordings.
